Consortium". This is a training grant sponsored by the Fogarty International

I am pleased to announce the 2012 call for applicants for the program 2D43 TW007393 "Peru Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Research Training Consortium". This is a training grant sponsored by the Fogarty International Center of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH/FIC) and awarded to the US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 6 (NAMRU-6), particularly to me as principal investigator (PI). The program is focused on parasitic infectious diseases and its overall goal is to develop sustainable capacity to conduct epidemiological research in South America by providing training opportunities and conducting collaborative studies.

This call for applicants is looking to identify competitive candidates for partial scholarships sponsored by our training grant to the following courses:

1. Masters in Epidemiological Research offered by Universidad Peruana
Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and NAMRU-6 (3 scholarships)
2. Short research methods courses to be offered in 2012 (6 scholarships)
3. Johns Hopkins Summer Institute in Tropical Medicine and Public Health (1 scholarship, later deadline)
4. Masters in Public Health at the Uniformed Services University (1 scholarship, later deadline)
The last two opportunities have later deadlines but early contact with our research team is recommended.

Individuals sponsored by our training grant join a broad network of international research in fields such as malaria, leishmaniasis, intestinal parasites, filariasis and other parasitic infections. Research topics
include epidemiology, clinical presentation, immunology, transmission dynamics, etc. In addition to formal training, students receive extensive mentoring from an extensive pool of experts in different fields. Long-term
collaborations are usually developed to conduct joint research, publications and grant applications. Professional development is greatly valued and nurtured, with substantial emphasis in jointly searching further graduate
training opportunities abroad.

Eligibility criteria include a) Citizen of Peru or other middle/low income country of the Americas, b) Completed undergraduate training, c) Experience conducting research in parasitic diseases, d) Long term commitment to reside and conduct research in the host country, e) Full time availability to complete the training and all requirements involved, f) Fluency in spoken and written English, ideally documented with a TOEFL score >100.

Priority will be given to collaborators of NAMRU-6 and the PI, personnel of the Department of Parasitology at NAMRU-6, qualified Ministry of Health or Defense personnel, researchers in the areas of interest of the training
grant and highly achieved scientists from underserved areas of Peru and South America. Professional and career-stage diversity is strongly encouraged.

Interested individuals should submit their curriculum vitae in the attached
format and an application letter to vanessa.cabellos@med.navy.mil,
highlighting fulfillment of eligibility criteria, participation in a high
priority group (if any), and a 200 word personal statement describing the
parasitic disease and research hypothesis of interest. Deadline for
applications is Feb 5, 2012.
