Academic Activities

  1. The first “Gorgas Advanced” course with the University of Alabama (UAB) took place between August 15 and 30, 2005. Twenty experts in Tropical Medicine from around the world (US, Canada, Japan and Australia) came as students during these two weeks.
     

  2. The first International Workshop for Research in Emerging and Reemerging Diseases in Peru took place on the 12th August, in the city of Iquitos. The Institute of Tropical Medicine, NMRCD and UCSD organized the event. Drs. Eduardo Gotuzzo, David Blazes and Joseph Vinetz, and other important national researchers participated, thanks to the support of the United States’ National Institute of Health. Graduate students from the UPCH and from Iquitos presented oral papers and posters. More information

     

  3.   Between September 15 and 18, Dr. Carlos Seas, President of the Peruvian Society for Infectious and Tropical Diseases (SPEIT) and Member of the IMT AvH presided over the IX Peruvian Congress of Tropical and Infectious Diseases, II Peruvian Congress of Hospital Epidemiology and Control of Infections and I AIDS Congress.

     
     

  4. On 23-24 September, Dr. Luis Velásquez Jones, Chief of the Department of Medical Editions and Editor of the Medical Bulletin – Federico Gómez Children’s Hospital, México, offered the course “Writing a Scientific Article”. The course was intended for Physicians, Residents, Fellows and Pre and Post-Graduate students.
     

  5. A “Good Clinical Practices” course took place on the 28th September, conducted by Dr. Carlos Goicochea. Medical Residents and Fellows from the Institute of Tropical Medicine took part.
     

  6. The Course “How to write a Grant Proposal”, headed by Dr. Joseph Vinetz, (University of California, San Diego) and Dr. Clinton White (Baylor College of Medicine) took place on 2-3 November, 2005.
     

  7. On November 17, Dr. Greg Matlashewski from McGill University, Canada (Dept of Immunology and Microbiology) gave a conference on “Developments in the treatment and diagnosis of Leishmania infection”.
     

  8. The First Regional Meeting of Youth Leaders, HIV/AIDS and Human Rights took place in Lima, Feb. 21-24, 2005. International Organizations gave their support, together with NGOs from different countries, Latin American HIV/AIDS Networks and other Peruvian Institutions. More Information
     

  9. On November 21st, 2005, a Workshop on the Theory and Demonstration of “PCR – OLIGOCHROMATOGRAPHY and its Application to the Diagnosis of Tropical and Infectious Diseases” took place. The speakers were: Drs. Jean Claude Dujardin, Thierry Laurent and Stijn Deborggraeve, both from the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine – Antwerp, Belgium.
